About

Hello, I’m Ken

I was born in Hong Kong and grew up in South Africa, where I’ve spent most of my life. I first took an interest in architecture in a high school art class, when we were introduced to the work of the modern architects.

How I got here

Johannesburg, Hong Kong and back

My studies began with an undergraduate degree at the University of the Witwatersrand, which I finished in 2011. After two years managing the family business, I went into practice at Gregory Katz Architecture and then Jason Berchowitz Architects, on everything from small and large houses to schools, warehouses and renovations.

I went back to study for my master’s at the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg, and graduated with distinction in 2018. Then I moved to Hong Kong for international experience and joined LWK + Partners, a practice with more than 400 staff. A larger firm meant much larger projects, mostly commercial retail, and a demanding pace. Back in South Africa, I worked on houses and an office renovation at JVR Architects in 2022.

I’m still near the start of my career in architecture. I’m curious about different ways of designing, I have plenty more experience to gain, and I’m looking forward to working on every part of it.

Two cities

Hong Kong, from the street up

Hong Kong is where I was born, and where I went back to work in 2019 and 2020. I still go back. These are from a trip in 2026: the view from the Peak, a street at night, and a manhole cover that carries a drawing of the city on it.

Away from the drawing board

Lifting, film and cooking

Away from work I train as a powerlifter, take photographs on 35mm film and cook. At school it was basketball and football; since then breakdancing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and yoga have all had their turn.
